“Certainly not, Inspector! To Carmichael, my mother was a reasonable, generous and trustworthy woman. However, when it came to me, she had nothing but disappointment and indifference,” I exclaimed back. The question forced me to hold back tears. There were sudden and fierce waves of anger, hatred and disdain towards mother, Carmichael...everyone! The emotions had come flooding back to me as quickly as an old memory did. Often, I could not remember what my memories were truly about. It was more the emotions that I had associated with them: pain. Even if it is too deep to see, pain marks you and leaves its shadow—
