For example, “No one has offered to share what I smell: sardines, dried durian, salted eggs, toasted sesame” (Lai 75). Ha is hungry and people aren’t offering her food because they are hungry too, this shows that getting food will be a struggle and that makes her feel inside out. Next, when in a refugee camp the people get very little food because the camps aren’t meant to be permanent shelters to stay in forever. Proof of this, “Food and water are provided, but they are rationed… refugee camps are not meant to be permanent shelters, but they do provide asylum and protection, and take care of the basic needs of refugees.”(Gevert) Refugees struggle in camps like these because of little food and overburdened health facilities, since they aren’t used to it they feel inside out. First, Ha is meeting new people and having new experiences and some of them bring her back again. Evidence of this is, “She has answers for everything just like mother” (Lai 167). Ha’s new neighbor reminds her of her mom because she is very nice to Ha and her family just like mom is nice which brings her back agian. In Saigon Ha was in first grade and she almost finished, but then war came and she had to leave so she is redoing it, and she didn’t feel smart up until this moment. For example, “I know that pink boy will get me, but right now I feel smart”(Lai 188). She can’t tell the teacher she is too smart for the class because she can’t speak English, but she does a math problem that nobody else can do and she feels smart like she used to. Finally, for refugees like Amela life is still different, but in a good way. Such as, “Here people don’t judge you by your religion”(Brice). Coming into a new country and thinking it’s going to be troublesome and then realizing it’s not bad has to be relieving.
