Giacchino utilizes both soft and upbeat rhythms during the voyage. For example, every time one of Riley’s memory islands crashes and falls into the memory dump the music becomes slow and depressing. However, when Joy is chasing Riley’s imaginary friend, Bing Bong, the music speeds up and begins to sound like carnival music. This is appropriate because Bing Bong is part elephant and made of cotton candy. Another instance of slow, sad music is when Bing Bong’s rocket gets thrown into the dump. He is depressed because whatever is thrown in the dump stays in the dump and he knows he will never be able to go on another trip again. He recalls the memories he had with Riley and the adventures they took when she was a child. Sadness comforts him and eventually Bing Bong wipes his tears and continues to the train station so they can get back to headquarters. She gets out with the help of Bing Bong and immediately searches for Sadness so they can return to headquarters. The music is very fast and loud, and the string instruments are very noticeable. Joy finally finds a way back to headquarters, and Sadness stops Riley from leaving her family. The emotions then realize how important Sadness is in Riley’s life, and slow, soft music plays in the background. Next, Riley has her first core memory in her new home and the melody from the beginning of the movie plays. Overall, the 2015 movie Inside Out is composed of mainly non-diegetic music. There were fast, uplifting parts to the background music as well as soft, depressing parts. The music in the movie was composed using an orchestra. At times, certain instruments or groups of instruments could be distinguished such as a tuba and the strings section. Sound effects were also utilized throughout the movie. In order to tie the whole movie together, Giacchino played the same melody at the beginning and end of the
