On the “outside” of the mask, it is a bruting black and dirty felt color to show what Jack is trying to be. He tries to be a big, scary, and powerful figure that is respected. Inside in the “crack” in the mask, it is white to show his inner purity of mind and soul. The big track shows that when he storms off crying when he wasn’t elected to be a leader, his true vulnerability. This crack represents that when Jack showed his true emotions, it was like one was seeing into his real soul and person. Another point to make about this mask is the placement of images. IN the mask made, I believe that the placement of images is very important to get the subject and meaning of the mask across to your viewer. If an image displaying happiness is put on a mask such as the one I’ve created, it would be very hard to follow and to understand. On my mask, I displayed only pictures of either bruting, respectable, and dark beings or quiet, sad and vulnerable beings. Most of the mask is covered up by the person Jack wants to be. In the book, Jack tries to act like this person, but if when the boys got to know him and were able to look past his fake bravery, they saw the person Jack was inside. The crack on the mask shows the small peephole into Jack’s true, quiet, inside. The big eye has a single tear to show Jack’s rejection and depression because of it. The white around the eye shows that he used to be a pure and sweet child, while the black shell covering it shows off what the island made him
