William Faulkner’s famous short story “A Rose for Emily”, is a tragic story where Emily is faced with different changes in time as well as losing the people that she loves which causes her to become mentally unstable. Emily’s father is extremely controlling and basically steals her childhood from her which leaves a lasting influence over her. This story is told from a first person point of view by the towns people, rather than one specific person. Faulkner depicts Emily’s life by breaking the story down into a series of a events which are out of order. “Moreover, the townspeople think of Miss Emily as superior, due to the way she exhibits lack of emotion, even though they perceive her as strange as well, since she shows no grief the day after her father‟s death. It is most likely that she does not believe that he is really dead at first and then the people of Jefferson show her their respect by not forcing her to bury the father immediately” (12). The definition of insanity is the state of being seriously mentally ill or driven to madness. Insanity causes extreme irrationality and a person to be mentally unstable. After the death of her father, Emily ends up meeting Homer Barron and they began to start dating. One author states that “One could even argue that Emily would have in any case gone mad. Maybe, driven by some repetition compulsion, she chooses Homer precisely because she unconsciously expects him to abandon her, just as her father did when he died” (191). Homer was Emily’s first love, as Emily had never been allowed to experience relationships with other men while her father was still alive. During their relationship Emily yearns for marriage although through time, she finds out that Homer wasn’t interested in marriage rather he wanted to remain a bachelor. He also had an interest in the other sex, which caused Emily to worry even more. Wether or not Homer is truly gay or not, is up for the reader to determine. After some time of waiting Emily goes to the store and asks the clerk for some poison demanding that she be given the best that they have. The store clerk explained to Emily that the law stated that they had to say what they were going to use it for and Emily refused. She comes across as snobby yet superior and stands her ground despite any situation. “she puts herself above humanity and acts like a god in the eyes of the narrator” (12). It is also known that Emily had ordered a mans toiletry set with Homers initials engraved into it as well as a complete outfit as well.
