The first of the three acts contains both the awakening and murder of Grendel (Crispin Glover), the ferocious beast who terrorizes the Danes for partying too loudly. In both the poem and the film, Beowulf travels to Denmark with his band of soldiers. Upon arrival, King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) greets Beowulf and his men and tells them of Grendel, the unkillable beast, who wrecks havoc to their celebrations. Beowulf summons Grendel and fights the fight no man would have dared to before. Beowulf accepts his age and decides to fight the dragon with armour and weapons. In the film, Beowulf, king of the Danes, sees the destruction the dragon is causing and takes it upon himself for his ultimate battle. The film dragon is clearly stated to be the illegitimate son of Beowulf and Grendel's mother, a curse upon Beowulf for falling for her trap. These vital movie plot points are non-existent in the poem. After a fierce battle between the dragon and Beowulf, neither emerged victorious as both perish after the fight. Beowulf and his dragon son lie -- lifeless -- on the beach as the waves takes the dragon son’s human body into the ocean.
