Early in the play Hamlet is already shown questioning suicide “O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt,Or that the Everlasting has not fix’d his canon ‘gainst self-slaughter!” (1.1) Hamlet’s own thoughts of suicide show how close he already is to insanity so early in the play. Yet, even though Hamlet is shown wanting to destroy his life he does not allow it since self-slaughter is considered a sin. Hamlet’s use of his own religion helps to show how he is still holding onto something to keep him from falling off the edge.
