When Socrates was arguing with Menos he used the inquiry of elenchus. Elenchus is when one person tries to corner the other person into getting the information that they want. This can be very scary in some situations. This may cause a person shut down and not say anything. Since the slave was a child this could have been the result if Socrates tried to use the method of elenchus. Firstly, the child would be anxious since he is a slave talking to a man that is friends with his owner. Secondly, the slave is a child, many children do not like to be yelled at and when they are the child will stop talking. If Socrates was going to prove that someone can recollect knowledge that they believe they hadn’t known elenchus is not the method to use. This is why Socrates decided to use the method of maiutics. The method of maiutics helps someone recall knowledge that they once believed they didn’t know. Maiutics approaches the person in more of a relaxed manner so that the person trying to recollect knowledge will be more comfortable. This story is about the detective Sherlock Holmes trying to solve a case about a poisoning. This is when Sherlock becomes very ill and looks like he might die soon. Sherlock calls for his partner Watson to come over and talk to him but will not let Watson call a doctor until six that evening. When it is finally six Sherlock tells Watson to go get the doctor named Culverton Smith. Smith is a doctor known for his residency of Sumatra. Sherlock informs Watson that his illness is called Coolie and it originated from Sumatra so if anyone would be able to cure him it would be Smith. Watson is only allowed to persuade Smith to come check on Sherlock, he is not allowed to force Smith to come. After Watson talks to Smith he agrees to come check on Sherlock to see if there’s anything he could do. Watson leaves Smiths’ house to tell Sherlock the good news, when he does Sherlock makes Watson hide in the room to listen in on the conversation with Smith. When Smith arrives he oddly is happy about Sherlock being so sick. Smith then proceeds to tell Sherlock that he had poisoned Victor but Smith didn’t stop there. He then admits that he was the one who poisoned Sherlock since he would not stay out of his business. This is when Sherlock tells Smith that he is not actually sick he was just fasting himself for four days to make him look sick. Sherlock was able to beat Smith
