Innocent Women In The Crucible

The Crucible is a play/story based on real events of the salem witch trials and is written by Arthur miller. In the beginning, Abigail williams is portrayed as good innocent girl. Through the play we realize she is actually a terrible, vindictive person. “I would never hurt Betty, I love her dearly”(25) makes Abigail sound like a good innocent person. But throughout this play we will realize how bad she really is. During the beginning Parris is questioning Abigail and why Betty is sick. Abigail is saying she has nothing to do with witchcraft. Abigail try’s to wake up Betty when parris leaves, and talks to mercy what to say when parris comes back. In the beginning, it is already clear that she isn’t a good person, even though, she is portrayed as one. She tells Betty to knock it off or they will get caught. Then she tells mercy to say nothing else, other than that they danced. As Abigail is portrayed as a good person in the beginning, the play tells us that she is the one who hurt Betty. Abigail lied to parris by not telling him that she drank blood. “You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctors wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!”( betty 30). She makes it sound like she is innocent by saying “that jumped, we never put it in!(43)”. She blames tituba, a native of hurting Betty. The. She confesses to drinking blood by blaming it on tituba. The quotes I have mentioned are important, because they show how innocent Abigail is in the beginning, and they also portray, that she really isn’t an innocent person. She accuses other people of witchcraft such as John proctors wife. She then runs away at the end because she is lieing about everything, and she knows she will get hanged if she doesn’t run
