Ishmael said slowly, “But after several doses of these drugs, all I felt was numbness to everything.” (Beah 121) This quote explains how Ishmael felt while taking the drugs. He liked the feeling and he also continued to do drugs as his time as a soldier. Ishmael was so numbed, during the war he never felt pain to the people he was killing. Ishmael said, “The idea of death didn’t cross my mind at all and killing had become as easy as drinking water.” (Beah 121) He was so numbed, he could kill and not feel guilty. This shows how bad the drugs were, he relied on the drugs to keep him numb. The drugs in sensitized Ishmael. Ishmael changes from a pure kid to a fierce army soldier because the lieutenant motivating him to kill and the drugs distressing his feelings. The lieutenant gives speeches about how killing the rebels is a good thing. The soldiers trusted him so they listened to everything the lieutenant said. 11/25 I stopped my reading for one day to relax my mind; I was unconsciously effected by the war Ishmael was in. I detested the rebel who killed his family, friends, and country. The war between the government and the rebels ruined the citizens peaceful lives. Families were separated, and children were brought to fright against their friend in different sides. Most children who became a soldier were either killed others or be killed by others, for most of them turned to be indifference, addicted with drugs, and killed more people for the joy of violence; Ishmael was one of them.…

Ishmael saw two of his childhood friends get killed during his first battle of the war. He describes seeing a seven year old named Josiah who shared a tent with him get launched and killed from an explosion and his friend Musa whom he had known from school get shot in the head (Beah 118-119). At only twelve years old Ishmael saw his closest friends get killed in battle. Ishmael being forced to fight and kill when he was only twelve years old was a terrible tragedy of the war and a further victimization of him, not something that reversed or undid his status as a victim. Both authors experienced unimaginable trauma and Ishmael’s victimhood cannot be negated as he had no choice but to fight in the war and partake in the…
