The Inner Game of Tennis
Is it possible to overcome self-doubt, anxiety and lapses of concentration? It seems impossible, but not to Timothy Gallwey. Gallwey has come up with ideas and strategies to deal with these complex issues. “The Inner Game of Tennis” is a book that I have constantly heard about, whether it be from my teammates, coaches, or friends. Honestly, I do not usually enjoy reading, which is why I had not taken it upon myself to begin reading the book. The outer game is the part of the game that everyone can see, the physical game. “The outer game involves playing against an opponent to overcome external obstacles, and to reach an external goal” (pg. 10). The external game is played on some kind of arena with set goals. Gallwey explains that this part of the game can be mastered by constant skill instruction and execution practice. However, I also feel that it doesn’t apply to some parts. For example, when teaching someone a new softball swing, they might not only need to be watched and critiqued 3 times, but maybe 1000 times before they know how to successfully complete the swing on their own. The business world may be a different story. I think that this theory does apply to the business world. For example, when showing someone how to use a new computer program, they may require assistance for 1-2 projects. However, after these projects, the individual should be able to complete a project without any
