PART 1: Discussion Questions
Chapter 1- Finding your Inner Fish
The author chose to use 375 million year old rocks because anything older than that would be considered fish, or fish like. However, rocks 365 million years of age would be considered dissimilar to fish. Therefore, the author chose a median of the two in the hope that the “missing link” between fish and land animal would be found. These types of rock were sedimentary due to their formation near rivers and water where fish definitely were. Shubin and his co-partners were exploring Canada on Ellesmere Island.

They later found a control panel for the chicks limbs, and if altered, the limb development would slow and accelerate. Deformities in the digits occurred when the tissue was removed later, and undergrowth occurred when removed early. This was an extremely important finding because they found out that this was occurring because one single gene, and this was the discovery of the Sonic Hedgehog Gene.
The Sonic Hedgehog Gene, was initially found in fruit flies as something that told other cells what to do, making different parts. However, later, the gene was found in chick embryos that linked the gene in the ZPA tissue to the creation of limbs, making the gene extremely crucial to the formation of arms, upper arms and digits to be precise. This gene is present in all animals with limbs, including humans.

It is the reason for the triggered development for the growth of the ear.
Chapter 11: The Meaning of it All
Shubin’s “biological law of everything” is that every living organism on the entire Earth belongs to parents. It is extremely important because it is one of very few laws that all scientists and common people can agree on. Everything in your body or an animal's body, or cells can be retraced to one of your parents and both. This is very important to medical purposes.
The “bozo” example is used to back up is law. It is used to show the passing down of genes and how each trait isn’t exactly yours, it can be traced to your parents.
Obesity:In the world today, especially America, obesity kills the most people than any other disease. Shubin says that ancient humans had a famine and a feast “cycle” that allowed them to gain and store weight and food, but then lost it all. Humans now, have the same problem except they store food and they do not lose it, instead keep adding to it.
Heart Disease: This disease can be traced back to obesity, the heart needs blood to pump throughout and disperse it correctly. When obese, the heart must work extra hard, causing
