While Shakespeare condemns Richard for his weakness, carelessness, and immorality, he shows Henry Boilingbroke to be strong, politically savvy, and honorable. Despite his banishment, Boilingbroke quickly comes to the defense of his inheritance (3.3.38-52). He is cautious to appear conciliatory and respectful toward the king and his government, and sets an example for the people as to the unconditional obedience of the monarchy.
