Dolphins In The Cove

The central theme of The Cove is of the injustice against dolphins, in the context of being held in captivity in marine theme parks all over the world, and also within the Town of Taiji, Japan where every year hundreds are captured or slaughtered. The backstory of the film comes from a man named Richard O'Barry, who was once the chief dolphin trainer for the seven dolphins used in the film Flipper. Once he noticed how depressed the captive dolphins he trained were after one “committed suicide” by ceasing to breathe in him arms, he started dedicating his life to protecting them, doing everything he can to have them released and live freely. Director Louie Psihoyos goes to Taiji, Japan to meet with Ric O'Barry to investigate the cove used to lure and capture dolphins. Besides following and interviewing O'Barry, Psihoyos also takes the time to describe and film the meetings of the International Whaling Committee (IWC), showcasing the corruptness of Japan paying small countries to attend and support Japan in their whaling activities. One is simply known as “Private Space”, as O'Barry describes, he never says anything else. With so much cloak and dagger, Psihoyos, O'Barry, an their team want a better look at exactly what they are hiding. Multiple attempts at getting a closer look later, they decide to go in the middle of the night, with cameras disguised as rocks to hide and capture footage. They were successful, and were able to capture haunting footage of the massive dolphin slaughter; hundreds being killed by the fishermen in whatever way they can, colouring the water a deep red through the whole cove.
