Initiation Research Paper

Initiation is being admitted or accepted by society. Initiation is used to teach individuals that there are life obstacles that they might not like or believe is challenging but the only way to be accepted by the majority is to face those challenges and conquer them all. Individuals are put in situations that separate them from their comfort zone and home environment, limits them on what to do and if they were to succeed they are reintegrated to a new social role or status. For example, if one wants to become the chief of a tribe he must sacrifice and show that he’s willing to lead the people under any circumstance. Majority of the times where initiation is used within modern society is when people want to join Greek organizations. Hermes wanted to prove to his father that he is worthy of becoming a God. At a young age, he started a lot of acts to receive honor and become Olympian god such as cross threshold, kills tortoise and invents a lyre out of the tortoise shell. To be initiated he wanted to show an act of sacrifice by snuck out of his cave at night, and went to steal Apollo’s cattle. To be in disguise of not being traced back to his home, Hermes invents Sandels that help him drive the cattle backwards. Though he was not successful in his mission because Apollo is a prophecy God, he was able to know who stole his cattle. In fury anger he tracked down Hermes and brought him to Zeus so he can be punished for his actions and return the cattle back to him. Although Hermes tries to play innocent and denies the whole allegation of stealing from Apollo by saying how can an infant steal some cattle.
