Another time Inigo showed he was driven was after Prince Humperdinck of Florin hired a Sicilian mastermind named Vizzini and his two associates, Inigo and a giant named Fezzik, to kidnap Buttercup, the Prince’s fiancée. The trio was to abduct Buttercup and take her across the Florin Channel to the neighboring country of Guilder. There they would kill her. This would then provide Prince Humperdinck with the perfect excuse to go to war against Guilder. Unfortunately for Prince Humperdinck, the plan was foiled by a mysterious man dressed entirely in black. This man in black pursued the bandits and caught up with them at Guilder. There he defeated Inigo in a fencing duel, strangled Fezzik to unconsciousness in hand-to-hand combat, outsmarted and killed Vizzini, and rescued Buttercup.

When Count Rugen said he would, Inigo replied “’I want Domingo Montoya, you son of a bitch’” (349). Inigo then then proceeded to attack until “ the Count screamed one final time and then fell dead of fear” (349). Inigo is driven because he had the courage to use his fist to cover his initial wound and persevere. After he was stabbed in the gut, Inigo appeared to be on death’s doorstep, but the thought of avenging his father’s death motivated him onward. If Inigo was not determined to avenge his father’s death and kill Count Rugen, he would have not covered his wound. He would have accepted death. Instead, Inigo got up and refocused on his ultimate goal while forgetting about his injury. Doing this, Inigo showed the perseverance to continue on no matter what circumstance he was in. Simply, he was not going to let stab wounds deter him from finishing his mission. The fact he was stabbed three times but continued fighting proved that. During this grueling duel, Inigo never stopped thinking of his father. This was what fueled him and allowed him to persevere and defeat Count Rugen. Thus, by enduring through the duel with a wound and eventually defeating Count Rugen, Inigo showed he was
