Lieutenant Kotler, the young soldier whom Bruno dislikes, attacks Pavel for spilling a bottle of wine into his lap, as he tries to refill his glass. The family is speechless after what they see Lieutenant Kotler do next. Bruno witnesses, “What happened then was both unexpected and extremely unpleasant. Litunet Kotler grew very angry and no one- not Bruno, not Gretal, not Mother and not even Father- stopped him from doing what is next, even though none of them can watch. Even though it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale” (Boyne 148-149). This occurs because facts are revealed during dinner about his father being a trader of the Germany. This anger motivates Lieutenant Kotler to beat Pavel and do unwarranted actions. Social injustice brings out the worst qualities of your character. It Would not be able to beat a person, but because of a time of social injustice, and Jewish people and Germans not being equal this is allowed. Just like Pavel is being mistreated so is Shmuel because he is beaten after he is found eating in the house. In the novel Chains Isabel is scarred for life because of the worst brought out in Madam, due to the superiority she believes she has to Blacks. In the Novel, The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, Bruno witnesses the horror of the Holocaust from the other side of the barbed wire, and he too is influenced by the ideas his superiors; Bruno learns to overcome the anti semitic-ideas and become friends with a Jewish boy. In the Novel, Night Elie witness the atrocities of the Holocaust, and what it can bring out in a person and what crimes they can commit like hanging a child. Imagine the world where people are just considered people and not branded by race or religion. No superiority to others would exist and people could just coexist, thus making the world a better place. As Martin Luther King Jr praised, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Everyday socially unjust crimes are committed and it is the job of people to put an end in it.
