1. Define instability and explain shoulder joint
a. Explain shoulder joint
i. The shoulder being the joint that has the most range of motion allows us to do many activities like throw a ball and do push-ups , this differs a lot …show more content…
Traumatic unilateral instability
i. One complication that can occur is Traumatic Unilateral Instability this is described in the book “Shoulder Instability, Alternative surgical Techniques” Traumatic unilateral instability is when the humeral head separates from the glenoid cavity due to a traumatic experience like a tackle in football or falling on the shoulder. An easier way to think of this is the golf ball gets pushed off the tee stretching the surrounding muscles kind of like an overused rubber band.
c. Atraumatic laxity
i. The next most common is Atraumatic instability this is natural laxity in the surrounding stabilization muscles and tissue allowing the humeral head of golf ball to move more than desired. This makes it easier for the head to dislocate. Many times this is people who say they are “double-jointed” which just means their tendons and ligaments are more lax than others.
2. Defects of instability
a. Hill-Sachs …show more content…
Glenoid Labrum tear
i. The next common defect is a Glenoid Labrum tear, the labrum is cartilage that covers and deepens the already shallow socket of the shoulder joint. The labrum plays a huge role in the stabilization of the shoulder. The labrum itself helps stabilize the joint but it also is a point for other ligaments to attach and help stabilize. When the shoulder dislocates whether from a traumatic experience or natural laxity in the joint this usually tears. This causes the joint to become unstable or more unstable. With this being torn the chances of dislocation increase dramatically.
3. Treatment of instability
a. There are several ways to treat these defects, one of the newest methods but not very popular is complete immobilization with the arm external rotated. This is not very popular because of the choice in braces, some of them do better jobs than others in keeping the arm
