Informative Speech Outline
Topic: Sputnik I
General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about one of the main events that occurred outside the United States and followed WWII.
Thesis: The Sputnik I was so significant because it was the first artificial satellite to orbit earth and it changed history and communication in many aspects.
I. Introduction
Attention Getter: In the year of 1885, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky first described in his book, Dreams of Earth and Sky, that a satellite can be launched into a low altitude orbit. 72 years later, Sputnik I was launched. ( Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Intro)
Reason to Listen: Sputnik I is so important to us because it opened up a new era of space excitement. Not …show more content…
Second, I will explain the events before and during the launching.
Finally, I will explain the effects Sputnik I had on Earth and history. II. First, I will describe Sputnik 1 itself.
Sputnik I was the first satellite to orbit earth.
Sputnik, named after its russian meaning “satellite”, was launched on October 4, 1947 at 10:29 am.
Sputnik I was ten times larger than America’s originally planned satellite.
“By the 1950s, scientists all over the world realized that it was becoming practical to launch an object into a circular path around the Earth. In mid-1955, the United States announced that it would launch the first satellite to commemorate the International Geophysical Year in 1957. The Soviet Union realized that 1957 was the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution.” (Sputnik 1)
Soviets eventually built a large satellite with a mass of 3,000 that would be the first to orbit earth
Transition: Now I will talk about Sputnik I before and during the launching.
Before the launching, America was perplexed as to how the Soviet Union was ahead of them in the space race. Many wondered how the Soviets were more advanced and had more ability to shoot …show more content…
Eventually, the Soviets launched Sputnik I, and beat america in the space race.
The satellite would send radio signals strong enough for radio stations in the U.S to pick them up and allow citizens to tune in and become awestruck at Sputnik 1.
Eventually, Sputnik I burned up, and its orbit was destroyed, as expected.
Transition: Finally, I will speak about the effects Sputnik I had on Earth and History.
In terms of communication, Sputnik 1 has changed communication immensely. We now have communication satellites to tell us if we need an umbrella or when we need to take shelter. If it werent for Sputnik 1, we wouldn’t have any of those things.
Sputnik 1 set off the trend of sending satellites into orbit.
Without Sputnik 1, Yuri Gagarin, first man to space, wouldn’t have made the achievement.
“Sputnik has been credited for helping instigate President John F. Kennedy's 1961 declaration that America would put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s — a move designed in part to reestablish U.S. technological superiority.” (How Sputnik Changed The World 55 Years Ago Today) .
