High School Shooting Speech

In America, we seem to be facing too many shootings. Too many tragedies, one after another: the Chardon High School Shooting, the Oikos University Shooting, the Aurora Shooting, and now the Sandy Hooks Elementary Shooting. Although the President’s memorial speeches have seemed to become somewhat of a routine, his speech following the tragedy in Newtown has proven itself as a great speech of our time: and I’m examining why. Despite these atrocious acts in which innocent lives were abruptly taken from us, the newest shooting is still fresh in our minds. To set the scene in Newtown, here is a basic run-down of the events that unfolded: Twenty year old Adam Lanza killed, Nancy Lanza, his mother who did volunteer work at schools including Sandy Hook, and later went to Sandy Hooks Elementary & gunned down 20 people. Out of the twenty victims, fourteen were children. It wasn’t long after the tragedy that Barack Obama, president of the United States of America, had …show more content…

Barack Obama used quotes from Bible scriptures and a sort of testimonial of Jesus himself. "Let the little children come to me," Obama quotes Jesus’ words, "and do not hinder them — for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." The allusions to the Bible scriptures are consoling to American Christians suffering due to the tragedy. The comfort of the children being in the Son’s very kingdom soothes the mind. Obama declared that “this job of keeping our children safe, and teaching them well, is something we can only do together, with the help of friends and neighbors, the help of a community, and the help of a nation.” Barack Obama invokes a sense of community and patriotism with terms such as “together” and “help of a nation.” Additionally, our president had quite a few questions to ask the audience such

School Shootings Are Not Enough for Stronger Gun Control Laws The Jonna Semeiks article “We the People Confront Sandy Hook” discuses many different factors that contribute towards explaining why school shootings and gun violence are inadequate to inspire stronger gun control laws. The deaths of children are not enough to offset the strong ties that American society has towards guns as a symbol of freedom, which causes people to respond with internal defense mechanisms that numb the pain of these tragic events instead of feeling a need to take corrective action. Semeiks presents a valid point that gun control reforms are needed; however, in order for that to happen anytime soon, the American people will need to largely shift their attitude on this topic. The author provides several examples successfully supporting that main idea.…

However, there are also quite a few gray areas where more research needs to be conducted and statistics gathered to formulate guidelines to determine when it is indeed necessary. Privacy in general needs to be treated in a way that is different from other rights and based on the serious consequences of not revealing facts that would be considered “private”.…

The President uses many references from the Bible to try to bring the citizens of America to common ground. In paragraph three he uses a line from the Bible, “The Almighty has His own purposes. ‘Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!’” This line refers back to when he is explaining that the outcome of the war and when that war should come to an end is not in anyone’s power besides God’s.…

Jeremiads have been around for thousands of years. This rhetorical strategy is named after the prophet Jeremiah, who prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem because Israelites turned their backs on the Lord and were worshipping false idols. A jeremiad is a sermon, speech, visual text, or essay that unifies people by creating tension between an ideal social life and its manifestation (Aufses). A traditional jeremiad presents a spiritual or biblical ideal for specific behaviors. It then describes the way an individual or community has fallen from the standards and provides a vision for an ideal public life that will result from a return to the high standards that have been presented (Aufses).…

Lyndon B. Johnson, like Kennedy, seized the opportunity to incorporate the civil religion into his inaugural address. Unlike Kennedy, however, Johnson utilized religious rhetoric in a more prophetic manner to illustrate his feelings that politics and religion should go hand in hand. Johnson reminded listeners that prominence in America was achieved “with the sweat of our hands and the strength of our spirit,” and that “if we fail now then we will have forgotten in abundance what we learned in hardship: that democracy rests on faith, that freedom asks more than it gives, and the judgment of God is harshest on those who are most favored” (Johnson, 1965). These words accurately illustrate Johnson’s approach as president and his belief that the actions taken by the United States are subject to the watchful gaze of God.…

By not incorporating strong examples of inductive and deductive reasoning to support his claims, Obama allowed his speech to be spoken in a celebratory way rather a speech backed up by facts and statistics. By intentionally minimizing the amount of logos used in the speech, Obama concentrated his ideas around hope and faith rather than a series of support through facts. For example, Obama did not support his claim with reasoning when he stated, “we will finish the job against Al Qaida in Afghanistan.” This revealed his intention to make the audience imagine what possibilities lay ahead when he takes over the presidency because it has a sense of expectancy. Another significant example was when Obama mentioned, “we will restore our moral standing in the world,” showcasing the effect of curiosity and potential the country has after change is carried out.…
