Sometime in the first millennium, Polynesians migrated to Hawaii in big canoes. They had to find their way from island to island by paying attention to the stars, the ocean currents, and the wildlife that lived in the area. With no way to make metal on the island, the people used tools made of wood, bone, and stone. Kings ruled separate kingdoms scattered over the islands, and many chiefs ruled under each king.
