Golden Eagle Bewilderingly, the world population of golden eagles is 125,000 to 250,000 birds. Concerning their diet they typically eat small or medium sized mammals and birds, such as rabbits, hares, ground squirrels, marmots, young deer, grouse, partridges and pheasants. While hunting the golden eagle uses its exceptional eyesight to detect movement of its prey. Then in a quick high speed dive it penetrates its victim with its piercing talons. Why do golden eagles have such super-keen eyesight to spot their prey? I will tell you. Cone cells that detect color and movement are highly concentrated in a zone at the back of the eye called the fovea. This helps produce preposterously good, perfect, and absolutely fabulous eyesight.
