Title of Speech: Teen Mother and College Student
General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of teenage mothers in higher education.
INTRODUCTION:
(1) Attention Getting Device: According to National Conference of State legislatures, about one in four girls will become pregnant at least one time before turning 20. Forty percent finish high school and only two percent attain a college degree by age 30 (“Teen Pregnancy Prevention, 2016).
(2) Central Idea: In order to attain a college a college degree, teenage mothers need a strong support system from their parents and teachers, and a reliable balance between both motherhood and college.

Society, as a whole, should be more aware of the obstacles teenage mothers face in order to be in higher education and create effective support systems to allow teenage mothers be academically successful, both for themselves and their children.
(4) Credibility: I am currently conducting a study of teenage mothers and higher education here at UNC through the Honors Program. I have been researching about teenage mothers in higher education for two years and a half.
(5) Preview of the Main Points: Support systems are essential for teenage mothers who want to continue to higher education. One of the most important support systems is their parents.
