Informative Shows Vs Mktv

Decent Essays
Some people argue that television is rotting our minds. I think not. Some shows like HGTV, game shows, and informative shows do no “rot” our brains. Instead they teach and entertain us. Informative shows inform us about science, daily information, medicine or new products, and for kids some pre-school basics. National geographic is an excellent source for science and geography. The news shows educate us on the daily events that are happening in our community. Commerical help us learn about medicine that we may need in our lives. The HGTV shows can help us make dinner, learn fun crafts, and watch things that may help us later in life. One such show is the cooking channel. It shows us interesting recipes that we can use for meals. The DIY

In the article, Watching TV Makes You Smarter, Steven Johnson argues that many of the shows that our population considers unhealthy are actually relatively healthy for our brains. On the other hand, Dana Stevens argues in her essay, Thinking Outside The Idiot Box, that Steven Johnson’s thesis makes absolutely no sense and that television in no way gets our brains thinking or makes us smarter. Johnson starts by explaining what he calls the Sleeper Curve. He does this by comparing older TV shows like Starsky and Hutch to recent shows like The Sopranos and 24.…

Fifty years ago technology was undeveloped and not a large part of people’s lives like it is today. Now you find children in front of a television for an excessive amount of time, which is affecting them in multiple ways. While such a large amount of time is spent in front of the television, it is causing them to become passive and have a difficult time comprehending things. Bly states another effect of the television, “Television provides an garbage dump of obsessive sexual material inappropriate to the child’s age, minute descriptions of brutalities, wars, and tortures all over the world: an avalanche of specialized information that stunts the brain” (22). Adolescents have dismissed their culture to only concern themselves with what is in the media.…

The debate on whether television programs are making society more educated has gone on for years. Author Steven Johnson goes into extensive and specific research about this topic in his article, “Watching TV Makes You Smarter”. Throughout the writing piece, Johnson discusses the differences in television from two decades ago, a decade ago, fives years ago versus television now. His argument is strongly saying that TV series’ and programs have advanced conspicuously by introducing more complexity within its plots and characters, and making watchers think more deeply. While some of Johnson’s points may be valid, not all television shows are increasing the intelligence of its viewers.…

It is so informative and educational yet it holds your attention and actually is quite suspenseful. There are also informative shows that are quite humorous, my two personal favorites being, “Sex Sent Me to the E.R” and “I Didn’t Know I was Pregnant”. “Sex Sent Me to the E.R” is a show that has real life patients tell their stories of how they ended up in a hospital after sexual intercourse. For example, one guy almost had to have his hand amputated due to the lack of blood flow from being handcuffed so tightly. Viewers get to once again watch a doctor’s thought process as he or she figures out how to handle the situation, and the same time you get a good laugh from another person’s ridiculous story.…

For many of us, television is such a constant presence in our lives that we haven’t stopped to question whether or not it is good, and most never ask ourselves if and how television might be hurting us. Television can make them feel like part of a group and let participate in a shared subculture in social situations where you may find yourself surrounded by strangers with whom you have nothing in common, a popular show or televised sporting event might give you something to talk about. Kids believe that what they see on TV is real and true, want to take extra care to make sure that the characters they watch. Some things on TV is not true at all they want you to believe it. Kilbourne suggests that the true purpose of television is to advertise rather than entertain: “The media know that television and radio programs are simply fillers for the space between commercial.” I find it very interesting that Kilbourne suggest that the commercial we skip when we have the chance are the true purpose of television. But she is correct, if a show is about 30 minutes, about 1/3 of the program will be commercials. Often times, I feel like commercials appear more than the actual content of the show. In addition, commercials are so essential for a television show that even when you watch television shows online, commercials and advertisements are included—ads that cannot be skipped.…

Television shows an unrealistic view of our society that distracts on what is really happening in our world and our lives. We use television as an escape from our problems like how Lenina use soma to escape from her problems. “ Lenina felt herself entitled, after this day of queerness and horror, to a complete and absolute holiday. As soon as they got back to the rest-house, she swallowed six half-gramme tablets of soma...” (Huxley 140).…

always wanted to be a superheroine. The idea of saving the world and protect people against the evil force has always fascinated me. However, the concept of a heroine for a little girl was not mostly inspired by cartoons instead it was inspired by politicians, revolutionaries, and visionaries that used their words and ideas as their fundamental power. Nowadays, even though my life had changed a couple of times, the desire is still alive. I can say that my hobby, my passion and my desires for a better society had combined in order to shape my love for political science.…
