Thanks for the educative and informative post. I agree with you on the strength of the research work on predominantly black, distressed urban community that is stricken by poverty and the intervention methodologies. In explaining action research, Hall (2006) demonstrates that Lewin (1946) developed action research theories within an intergroup framework to define problems and using social research to plan action, and then execute the actions followed by the knowledge and assessment. In addition, Hall claims that others have evolved these change experiments during the cost of time into accustomed processes that are widely used in health and social

As Cher Horowitz would say, “You see how picky I am about my shoes, and those only go on my feet.” If Clueless took place in 2017 NYC, then this outfit would have been Cher’s iconic, yellow, plaid skirt-suit ensemble. This look has transcended along the ages. Plaid never goes out of style, and neither does our lookbook! Christine of Louis Reign has shared with us that, “My style is edgy with a twist.…

John, I too agree with Dr. Wallers point regarding incarceration. This type of enforcement is backed up by facts, and that it simply isn’t effective. Building our community up, beginning with our roots are strategies we need to focus on. As for the 911 calls I believe Dr. Wallers point isn’t to precisely label our tax dollars to an exact location.…

The New York Times released A Social Reflex: Police and Blacks, Seeing Threat, Close Ranks, written by Amanda Taub in light of the recent Black Lives Matter movement. It focuses on a theory called Intergroup Threat Theory, which essentially explains why the individual shootings of Black Americans is having such a large effect on the Black population across America. Researchers, John Dovidio from the Intergroup Relations Lab at Yale University and Kimberly Rios, a psychology professor from Ohio University, are leading the way in analyzing these group dynamics and responses (Taub, 2016). Dovidio has explained that our nature as social animals is driving these group divides. He said that when members of a specific social group feel threatened they close ranks with those they feel similar to.…

These strategies can build character and produce faith within the heart. In order to create something, you have to start with nothing. In this case, new African American activist is seen as nothing and must bring attention to them to become something. Most of the strategies that haven’t been created should be a nuclear weapon to fight against injustice on African Americans. No one wants to live in fear, no wants to have their voices sealed, and no one wants to live in a world where change isn’t occurring.…

Generations of black communities in America have been disrupted throughout various eras, including Jim Crow laws, the targeting and imprisoning of Civil Rights activists, and mass incarceration through the devious “war on drugs”. Living in a society so focused on the false myth of meritocracy makes it difficult to see the larger reasons why people of color have to work twice as hard to earn half as much, or why greater competition is created between the few opportunities given to them. This impossible feat can often lead to settling for a life wrapped up in drugs and gang violence because it’s seen as the easy way out. Undoing centuries of oppression can’t be fixed in…

Similarly to the imperfections of all other ideologies, Black Liberation falls to the same fate. Issues arise when seeing ideologies put into practice or applying them to current day living conditions. The sort of change called for by Black Liberation is not easily attained. The urgency brought by Dr. King and his “time to act now” was in direct response to the time of change.…

It has been more than 50 years since the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I have a dream speech”, yet racial inequality and tension about race is still very much a part of U.S. society. A recent report from the Pew Research Center called “King’s Dream Remains an Elusive Goal; Many Americans See Racial Disparities.” The Pew Report found that people from different ethnic groups varied in what they think about the prevalence of racism, and whether people are treated differently by race within particular social institutions. The report also documents significant economic inequalities between whites and blacks regarding wealth, family income, and homeownership.…

One of the most important components of community based research is ensuring that your research is being conducted in a way that is empowering the community and is relevant to the needs of the community. Ensuring that community based research is designed in an empowering way is especially important because often this type of research is conducted in vulnerable communities that have experienced various levels of discrimination. In Meredith Minker and Nina Wallerstein’s Community-Based Participatory Research for Health: From Process to Outcomes, there are several case studies, which include a plethora of best practices. For the purposes of this paper, I have chosen two case studies from the aforementioned book, which I feel best demonstrate how…

Strides have been made toward eliminating the prevalence of racism, but that is not to say that it doesn’t remain a huge problem in today’s society. As a result, activists in society have come forward by creating the #BlackLivesMatter movement. This movement’s main goal is to heighten awareness of racism and help confirm the validity of black people while also calling attention to the problem of inequality in general. Ultimately, #BlackLivesMatter is meant to spread the word that we still live in a heavily racist society, and we need to come together to end the injustices that have come as a result of racism.…

Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Mike Brown, and many more have joined a category of African American people, who have been unjustly slain. Although, their murders have been highly publicized, caused uproars and inspired movements such as #blacklivesmatter, the people in this category have received little to no justice. It appears that we are seeing more and more African American lives taken. The fact that most of these murders are at the hands of white police officers or vigilantes calls to question whether the slave master has earned a badge and if he swapped his whip for a gun. These homicides are a modern-day mechanism for social control of African Americans.…
