The Catch Rule In the past few years a “catch” in the NFL has been greatly disputed. The 2017-18 season was one of the most controversial years of football yet, due to fact no one knows what a catch is anymore, and the NFL needs to fix this. Numerous close games are decided by controversial calls, including multiple in the Super Bowl. Before the 2018-19 season begins their needs to be a change in the rules so everyone has a clear idea of catch. During the life of football itself we have gone from no replay and minimal rules to criticizing every call made. While some say that the NFL has to various and what the referees say is right, this can’t continue referees frequently contradict themselves by making calls in the heat of the moment that are the wrong call. On the right Zach Ertz catch was ruled complete for a touchdown in a critical moment of the game. We get two very similar plays but two completely different calls, why though? The referees and the NFL do not know what a catch is. This problem infuriates players and fans.
In football there will always be controversy over calls, penalties, catches, touchdowns and so on, but if we have a definite rule of what a catch is there won’t be as great of problem as there is currently. Commissioner Roger Goodell even recognizes this and in January before the Super Bowl said that, “clearly catch, no-catch has been a lot of discussion and a lot of disagreement ... and I think we can clarify this rule and I think we can do it with a lot of hard work [and] focus and get to a place where -- I'm not going to tell you there won't be controversy, but I believe we can get to a much better
