School Safety Not Gun Regulation As always with the unfortunate event of a school shooting people cope with the loss of loved ones and stay somber for a spell, but as the dust settles from this tragic event the usual debate of gun laws begins anew. This debate although important does not focus on what truly matters when trying to mitigate the occurrence of school shootings. The subject of discussion that will lead to progress in the prevention and deterrence of tragedies such as the Sandy Hook shooting is enhancing school safety through increased school safety funding, mandating minimum requirements for School Resource Officers, and individualized security plans.

Kansas enacted legislation that permits school districts to allow licensed employees to carry concealed handguns on school grounds”(533). Even in states such as Arkansa where it is illegal to possess a firearm on campus, some districts are finding loopholes in pre-existing concealed weapons laws(533). This overwhelming support for armed teachers and faculty is rooted in the fact that it is considered cost-effective in comparison to School Resource Officer (SRO). Which is true because the cost of an SRO is estimated to be between $50,000 to $80,000 a year depending on location(534). Although arming teachers appears to be a cost efficient and effective plan it is not without its risks. School should be advised that an increase in liability for negligence would be expected because of the probable chance of a teacher or faculty member
