I have been placed into a box. A box that I would have never dared to step out of because I would no longer be accepted in society. What is the box? The box is society's roles that women are supposed to partake in: when we go against them, then it is unconventional. The traditional viewpoint of a women is sexy, highly feminine, passive, graceful, polite, and weak. Nowhere in society or on that list does the word “athletic” appear. Women have been breaking down barriers that have left them outside the professional and collegiate sports world for most of history. The idea of a women being strong, fast and or powerful is not considered attractive and often leads people, especially men, to feel uncomfortable because it is not the traditional characteristics a women should have. Thoughtout time gender inequality has been a huge issue within the sports world paying women a lot less, and giving them less notice as well as credit for the same things their male counterparts participate in. All athletes participate in these routines, not just male athletes. each athlete demonstrates the same amount of dedication and commitment on and off the field, court, gym or wherever their sport might be played on or in. Female athletes should be given the respect they deserve. Today, women have made great strides in sports compared to where they used to be. Women will be breaking down barriers in the sports world until we are treated and paid equally as our male counterparts.
