Have you ever had a dream that you knew would not become a reality? Think again, because it might come true. Walt Disney was a person who never gave up on his dreams to make Disneyland a reality, and he encouraged kids and adults not to give up on theirs. Walter “Walt” Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, to parents Elias and Flora Call Disney. He was one of five children. Walt had four brothers, and one sister. Walt discovered his talent for drawing at a very young age. When he was seven, he began to sell his sketches to their neighbors and friends. Walt attended McKinley High School in Chicago. While he was there, he focused his time between drawing, and the school newspaper. At night, at would attend the Academy of Fine Arts to improve his drawing skills. (“Disney” 94-96) In 1925, Disney married Lilian Bounds, a woman who did ink and paint for Disney Brother’s Studios. He would not come in and meet her parents for a while, because he didn’t own a suit. He did after a few months, and he proposed to her. In December 1933, Lilian gave birth to daughter Diane Marie Disney. Three years later, Walt and Lilian adopted their second daughter Sharon Disney. He not only wanted a park that parents and children could enjoy together, but he wanted to create a theme throughout the park. On July 17, 1955 Disneyland theme park opened. It cost $17 million, and featured 18 attractions and many of them were based on films and characters Walt made famous. On opening day, more than double crowds thought were coming showed up.
