“Big things come in small packages,” was a common phrase I would always hear back during my elementary school days. My mom would always tell me this right before I went off to school, but to be honest, I never actually fully understood this cliché saying (probably because I was too young). That was until I came across owning a ukulele. This little contraption of glued wood and metal proved to be a great challenge for me. I thought since it was so small and only had four strings, it could not be that hard to learn it, but boy, was I wrong? I cannot tell you how many times I got frustrated because I either hit the wrong note or played the wrong chord in a song. The ukulele is not just a simple instrument found in Hawaiian heritage or used to entertain little kids. In reality, it is a complex instrument that is well played throughout other parts of the world and can help with more than just little kids. On the contrary, the ukulele can be just as complicated as many other instruments. Just because it is a tiny instrument does not mean that it takes less time to learn. Being a guitar player for many years, when I first picked it up and held it, I could really tell the difference. The guitar has a very different size and overall shape than the ukulele. The chords and riff fingering are different; I had to learn basic songs in a completely new way. It took me so long to get used to playing and holding it that every time I switch back and forth between guitar and ukulele, it takes me a few minutes to get use to them. I think the reason why people think the ukulele is an easy instrument to master is because they see this small instrument and pass judgment. People think that after a week, they could master the
