`Steam engines work by heating up water in a boiler to create steam. The steam is then piped into a cylinder, which causes a piston to move. These engines were first used to pull a thresher, which is machine that separates grain from plants. Later, a “steam plow” was invented by Obed Hussey. The name steam traction engine was soon applied to machines like these who used a steam engine to plow, pull, or do other farm work. The use of steam power allowed farmers to work much faster; however, there were many problems with the steam traction engine. First of all, if the ground was not level, the water would spill out of the boiler. Two operators were also needed to run the tractor, one at the engine and the other to operate the plow itself. Perhaps the most serious problem with the steam engines was they would often catch grain on fire.
