Leeman Bennett once said, “A winner is someone who sets their goals, commits themselves to those goals and then pursues their goals with all the ability that God has given them. That requires someone who believes in himself or herself, who will make self-sacrifices, work hard, and maintain the determination to perform at the best of their ability” (“Running”). This is the mind set of every great softball player, and in order to have this mind set, players must acknowledge and appreciate the history of the sport. Understanding that softball is a unique sport with a rich history that has greatly impacted the world and has both influenced and been influenced by all of the people it involves is an important aspect of being successful in the sport.

While watching a Harvard versus Yale football game in the Illinois Farragut Boat Club, a Yale fan playfully threw a boxing glove to a Harvard fan who hit it with a stick. While watching this happen, a news reporter, George Hancock declared “Play Ball!” (“History of Softball” Athletic). Even though softball was created as an indoor sport, after eight years it was moved outdoors (“10”). Trying to name the sport was a challenge itself. It went through the names cabbage ball, mush ball, and also pumpkin ball. Finally in 1926, the name softball was proposed by a Denver YMCA, and it stuck (“History of Softball” History). In fall of 1933, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) was founded. The ASA brought in rules that were standardized and had to be followed by anyone who wished to play the sport. They also established different rules and regulations for different age groups to make it fair (“History of Softball” History). The sport’s first major appearance was in 1933 at the World’s Fair.
