“Going once…twice…SOLD to the gentleman in the front!” Welter Weight, my eight-year-old thoroughbred horse from Lexington, Kentucky, sold as a yearling at auction for one million dollars to become a “supposed” famous racehorse. Being the grandson of Seattle Slew, the farm who bought him believed that he would be a successful racehorse. Unfortunately for them, but lucky for me, racing was not the career for Welter, and they soon retired him. He ended up at a show horse barn where he was trained and was ready to be sold. The prized racehorse’s competition career would soon have setbacks, including a show-stopping injury. Owning a horse is every girl’s dream- or as Cinderella would sing, “the dream that you wish will come true.”(Cinderella)

I was devastated when I found out Welter would have to stay inside the barn and not be ridden for several lingering months until his leg healed sufficiently. [2] During these “off” months, Welter, who was tired of being in the stall, had to just be hand-walked and grazed in the near-by fields. [3] Patiently, I waited until he would be able to be ridden again. [5] Although I would not be able to ride, the most important thing was that his injury would not be chronic, and soon I would be back in the saddle. [4] Frustrating and disappointing, the lessons that I learned were valuable and beneficial. After the several months of “stall-rest” were over, we could finally begin the slow process of getting him back into work. While Welter was not able to be ridden during the show season due to his injury, I still was able to enjoy taking care of him and getting to know him better while on the ground. [6] Crises develop
