Informative Essay On Prosthetics

Some people have secrets and opinions that others do not know about. Others have no boundaries to what they will tell others. I fall somewhere towards the no boundaries side of the spectrum, although, I still have a fair amount of things I do not tell my friends and family. I could say how much I absolutely hate those slushy days of spring where your shoes get soaked or I could talk about how much I really do not care about my horse hair allergy and still would love to have a horse but, instead of saying those, I will not. Instead I will talk about that instance in which I didn’t tell them about me. I hear people everyday talk about things they wish to do. I hear them make plans but, all of this talk and plans lead nowhere. Nothing ever …show more content…
During my junior year of high school, in US History, at one point we were going over the Civil War era, specifically dealing with the medicinal and artillery advances we as a nation excelled at during that time. Many found it boring and useless in reference to today’s equipment. I found the most interesting part to be the one focusing on post-war extremity aids. I am pretty sure I had spent a couple days after school researching how doctors/engineers created these prosthetics and what materials were most popular. I then compared them to today’s versions of the same exact tool. Honestly, I do not think the basis of the idea has changed all that much. The materials, on the other hand, have made it possible to broaden the capabilities of the prosthetic as a category. Although this may sound bad, I have spent a lot of time focusing on things that interest me when they coincide with the subject. In chemistry, for example, I thought that naming carbon compounds was a lot of fun when other struggled with the basic concepts of it. I took time from other subjects’ homework to help those who did not understand and I had fun doing it. Later though I regretted it when I found myself hurrying to finish work due the next

James Edward Hanger was hit in the leg by a cannonball just two days after enlisting and had to have that leg amputated. He created the first prosthetic limb for himself when he returned home from the war, and after the war ended, he received the U.S. patent for his invention. This artificial leg was able to bend at the knee and the ankle as opposed to the peg leg he was provided with after his amputations. Although he had originally only created the limb for himself, it lead to an important part of many peoples lives today. Prosthetics are life changing for many war veterans, as they allow for mobility and independence for those who would not otherwise have it.…

“Desire” was not only the title of the poem, but also what I initially felt towards the poem. I’ve never been like those people who automatically know the central idea the moment they read a poem, but I had that desire to identify a central message. Without even realizing it, I automatically began to read the poem scanning for a meaning, the central idea, something to grasp onto. Just like the bees, I found myself buzzing around searching for a meaning or as Billy Collins states in his poem, I was trying to “...torture a confession out of it” (Collins 14). Looking back, I realize how similar I am to the bees in this poem, like the bees, I wasn’t sure how to get to my destination.…
