I’ve never been able to explain my major in neuroscience without the someone asking me, “Oh, so you’re going to study diseases and disorders, like Autism and Alzheimer’s?” I’ve now realized that it isn’t their fault at all. I mean, that’s all we people in the neuroscience field ever really talk about anyway. It’s basically like telling a construction worker, “Oh, so you’re going to destroy buildings and use explosives?” The study of neuroscience isn’t merely focused on the disorders and diseases affecting the nervous system, rather, much of neuroscience is concentrated on venturing through the nervous system to discover new functions and parts unknown to the world before. Neuroscience isn’t all about the “Dark Side” and it’s about time scientists, doctors, and students start talking about the “plus side” of the human brain and the study of neuroscience.

Think about how many emotions you feel every day. Could you possibly think of a time when you didn’t need your emotions? Probably not. Many neuroscientists research on where emotions derive from and how we trigger them. This portion of neuroscience is known as affective neuroscience. Affective neuroscientists utilize neuroscience to understand how emotions work. Imagine what would happen if you didn’t have emotions. How would you feel sadness and anger?
