But then there are also migrant workers who have perhaps come here illegally: those who have a debt bondage that they may never be able to come out from under. Debt bondage is also known as debt labor or debt slavery. Often times a person will promise to do labor or services to repay a debit or obligation of their own, or a family member’s debt. Traffickers may charge victims for real or alleged debt that they do not reasonably apply the victim’s wages for. Traffickers may charge victims fees for missed work, food, transportation, boarding and other incidentals like bad behavior (MHeffern 7/11/12, ABC’s of Human Trafficking: Debt Bondage Exploitation and Force). This is especially true when that person has been brought illegally into another country or feels the trafficker has greatly helped them in some way. There may be no time duration or even type of service required for the repayment to be paid. Many times someone will provide the trafficked person with lodging, food and transportation, but it is always racking up the debt already owed.
