Horse racing is an ancient sport. Archaeological records indicate that horse racing occurred in Ancient Greece, Babylon, Syria, and Egypt. Horse racing was popular enough to be included in Ancient Greek Olympics, and was very similar to chariot racing.
There are many different types of horse racing but the most popular include: flat, jump, harness, and endurance racing. Flat racing is where horses gallop directly between two points around a straight or oval track. Jump racing is when horses race over obstacles. Most have stopped running fast enough, or have become injured. When this happens, the horses are no longer needed, and “discarded” by the horse racing industry. Horses constantly have dramatic falls and if they break a leg or shoulder, their career, and probably life, has come to an end. When their leg or shoulder breaks, the bones explode into tiny pieces, making it unrepairable. Even if the injury is repairable, the costs are too high and the odds of the horse making it back to full health are too low.
