In the early Christian church, Halloween was a day for remembrance of martyrs, which is also called All Saints Day. All Hallows Eve, was the day before All Saints Day which began that time of remembrance. Presently, Halloween had become mostly a secular holiday. A time when kids dress up in a costume of their favorite fantasy character or a hero, and go door to door collecting candy. Although that might not sound so bad, kids now sometimes dress up as devils, vampires, and other evil characters like that, that seem to glorify Halloween to be a time for the devil and not for God. Halloween was supposed to be a time for remembrance for martyrs and saints. Halloween is actually a feast day meant for saints, but the fun celebration of Halloween has trapped us in having a fun time instead of remembering saints and …show more content…
The Celtic tribes are Halloween's roots. The people in the Celtic tribes, which they are called “Celts”, the Celts believed that the souls of the dead, meaning ghosts, goblins, witches, etc, return back to earth. They believed and thought that the only way to scare away the evil spirits is for everyone to wear masks or dress up as something scary, and light bonfires so the spirits can go back to where they once originally were. Then when the Romans had conquered the Celts, the Romans tweaked the things to the Samhain festival. For example, they made center pieces out of apples and nuts for a Roman goddess of the orchards names Pomana. They also bobbed for apples and drank cider. After the Romans, in 835 things changed. Pope Gregory IV moved this celebration for all the martyrs and later on, all saints, to November 1st. On November 2nd, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates all Souls Day. After Pope Gregory IV moved this celebration, that was when All Hallows Eve was created. All Hallow’s Eve means “holy evening,” and All Hallow’s Eve shortly became known as today’s
