Informative Essay On Gymnastics

Decent Essays
I've always been active in sports since I was little. I started gymnastics my third grade year, and just had so much passion for the sport. However, my 7th grade year my doctor diagnosed me with scoliosis. I Didn't know too much about scoliosis. The doctor went into further detail explaining that due to the huge percentage in curvature in my spine a brace wouldn't work, and I would need to have surgery. Immediately my first question was whether or not I could still do gymnastics? The doctor explained to me that I could pretty much do any other sport but gymnastics because of the rods and screws that would be place along my spine. The news devastated me.
However, during my surgical experience the staff were phenomenal, very helpful and accommodating.

I guess I just put my head down and did what I had to. I’m not a particularly positive person, but I am incredibly persistent. I decided that I was going to be able to walk without a limp and that I was going to be able to compete at diving again and that was that. It took two years, three surgeries, weekly visits to the pain clinic and over a year of physical therapy, but damn it I did it.…

My hips are uneven, my ribcage is twisted, and my waist falls differently on each side of my body. When I trace my fingers down my spine, I follow the winding path of three, 50 degree curves. For most of my adolescence, I strapped myself into a back brace for 23 hours a day. I remember the painful purple bruises from its tight, velcro straps, the embarrassment of being held aside at security lines, the misery of wearing five layers in the summer, and the taunts of one of my classmates who punched me and shouted, “Hard back! Hard back!”…

For over ten years my average day consisted of four main activities: school, homework, gymnastics, and sleep. While school breaks or holidays may have upset three of the four, competitive gymnastics was always a constant. Three hours a day five days a week with no off season left no room for apathy. During my years as a gymnast, I learned the lessons I am sure every athlete is taught— dedication, time management, and determination. However, gymnastics taught me two lessons that other athletes fail to learn thoroughly.…

However, the trouble with throwing the word “sport” around is that most people would not be able to correctly define exactly what a sport is. Some will say there has to be a ball, but what about hockey? They don’t use a ball. Others say a sport has to require skill, but someone can be skilled at balancing a pen on their lips but that is not a sport. According to Merriam-Webster’s definition, a sport is a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other.…

Why Olympic Gymnastics Teams Will Have Four Members in 2020 Julia Fincher in the article, The Future Four: Why Olympic Gymnastics Team Will Have Four Members in 2020, states that in 2020 the Olympic Gymnastics committee will be cutting the team sizes down from five to four members. This is a disadvantage and an advantage and can be argued from both sides, this article argues from both points of view. A pro of this is that it would allow six gymnasts per team but, two would only be individuals. A con of this is that they will have to leave a lot of talented gymnasts home instead of bringing them to Tokyo. The two individual gymnasts will substantially be alternates.…
