It was called Evans & Dodge Bicycle Co. They built bikes and automotive components. They got so much business that they said goodbye to bikes and focused completely on cars. In 1900 they opened up a machine shop called Dodge Brothers.
In 1901 Ransom Olds is looking for some good machinists to hire. He finds the Dodge boys and hires them. He employed them to make engines and transmissions. They make a lot of money. Instead of stopping there they wanted invest in more companies.
One day the Dodge brothers ran into Henry Ford looking for an investor. No one wanted to invest in him because they said that you would lose money. The brothers didn’t care what anyone said so they invested in him. They did it because they wanted to expand their business and they had all of that Oldsmobile money going to waste in their pocket. They gave him $10,000 in cash and materials for 10% share of the company. They also got the rights to his assets in case of a bankruptcy. Dodge made the chassy and the engine for Ford. Ford was becoming very wealthy. If he was becoming wealthy that meant the brothers were becoming even more wealthy. While they were bringing in the big bucks, they were trying to become popular in Detroit. They had a problem. The people looked down on them because they would go to a bar with their workers after hours. The Brothers tried to go to the Detroit Orchestra but the owners said they couldn’t go in because they weren’t high society. When the orchestra was up for sale, they bought it.
