Swat is where Malala Yousafzai used to live (now living in Birmingham, England) and was shot on Tuesday, 9th of October 2012 by the Taliban on the way to school. Fighting for girl’s education has been an ongoing battle for years in Swat Valley. Girl’s were able to go to school but when the Taliban entered the valley in 2007, it became a greater risk. The Taliban had blown up about 400 schools and the reasoning was mostly that the teachers were “providing ‘Western’ and ‘non-Islamic’ education” [3]. In I am Malala, Malala talks about how many girls she knew quit school and one was only twelve when she married and had two kids. Education is obviously not required but the idea that it shouldn’t be was put into people’s minds by Fazlullah, the leader of the Taliban. Malala also talks about the radio station that Fazlullah had and would say that girls belong in purdah, which is when a girl hits puberty and can no longer be seen by men and must remain hidden. The people of Swat were controlled by fear and began to believe what Fazlullah was saying. In the Middle East women are meant to stay at home and a lot of times the family of the woman would shame her for trying to have an education. With the movement of empowering women in the Middle East it would increase their economic involvement. To do this the Middle East would have to change their entire mindset and undo years of segregation and inequality and in no means will it be easy.
