Are you feeling really grumpy in the morning times before you consume your coffee? Are you not able to concentrate before you take your first sip? Or can you not bear the thought of not having your coffee for at least one day? These are all signs of a coffee addiction. “A study published in the Journal of Caffeine Research in 2013 coauthored by Laura Juliano, Ph.D., a psychology professor at American University in Washington, D.C, "indicates that more people are dependent on caffeine to the point that they suffer withdrawal symptoms and are unable to reduce caffeine consumption even if they have another condition that may be impacted by caffeine”(3). “The negative effects of caffeine are often not recognized as such because it is a socially acceptable and widely consumed drug that is well integrated into our customs and routines, there is a misconception among professionals and lay people alike that caffeine is not difficult to give up” (3). “The majority of people who use caffeine safely every day may find it difficult to understand how caffeine use could become disordered or problematic” (2).

Before my feet even hit the side of my bed my mind is thinking about coffee. Once I start smelling the aroma brewing in the air it’s like my adrenaline starts pumping. Each day I consume 3 to 5 cups throughout my long days at work. I cannot bear the thought of not having my coffee beside me in order for me to get through my day. That’s why I choose coffee as my substance to withdraw from for the next 2 weeks. I never thought of coffee as being an addiction until I started taking this course. Coffee to me was like a regular drink that gave me that shot of energy that I needed to conquer any unforeseen circumstances at
