Breast Cancer
Cancer is a group of more than a hundred diseases that have one thing in common: A change that occurs in your body and makes your cells multiply and grow out of control. Breast cancer is the kind of cancer that starts in the breast as calcium deposits or as the formation of a lump (Silverstein 34). There are a number of different types of breast cancer which can be put into two main categories: non - invasive and invasive breast cancer. Non - invasive breast cancer is a cancer that remains in one particular location in the breast, without spreading to other parts of surrounding tissue, ducts, or lobules. Alcohol can cause genetic mutations, when it breaks down into a substance called acetaldehyde, which can trigger a response from the body causing cancerous cells to develop (Key). Women who have three alcoholic beverages a week have a fifteen percent higher chance of developing breast cancer and increases another ten percent for each additional drink a woman has a day. Research shows that drinking alcoholic beverages whether wine, liquor, or beer can increase a women’s risk of breast cancer. Even though only a few studies have been completed on alcohol consumption, a study done in 2009 found that drinking three to four alcoholic beverages per week increased the risk of cancer coming back in women who were diagnosed at an early stage …show more content…
With that there are four stages that determine how severe the cancer is: stages zero to four. Stage zero the cancer is non – invasive and stage four the cancer is invasive and has spread to other parts of the body. The risk of a women developing breast cancer depends on how the women’s body ages, the genes they inherited and the amount of alcohol which they consume. If a woman develops breast cancer they will start to notice lumps, dimpling of the skin and also swelling of the breast. Clinical breast exams, mammograms, and ultrasounds can be used to determine if any of the symptoms are cause by breast cancer, if so the patient can start treatments. Treatments for breast cancer include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. After treatments it is best for the patient to have some sort of support group.
