For school all you need to get started is a high school diploma or equivalent which is a G.E.D. Most electricians start out going to a technical school. Most schools offer programs related to electrician work. After completing this school you still need to come back through out a year to take classes about laws and procedures that have changed. To learning how to do everything you pretty much have on the job training. Electricians learn through a 5 year apprenticeship program. To complete the apprenticeship you need to complete 144 hours of technical training and a total of 2 thousand hours of paid training. After completing your apprenticeship you can now be a journey man worker which means you can do a job or work by yourself instead of being watched the whole time.
