I chose to research autism because I have been around many that have been diagnosed with it. Although, I have never researched it in depth other than knowing most symptoms and what I have heard. Since first grade, I have been great friends with a girl who is high functioning autistic. I have also been around some severe autistic children through cadet teaching and childcare. The most interesting information I found from this research is from a girl named Temple Grandin, she is an autistic adult now does a lot of research. Autism Spectrum Disorder is classified as a neurodevelopment disorder that is identified with numerous social difficulties with other motor movements and behaviors both verbal and nonverbal. Some of the symptoms that are warning signs are that children are not reaching milestones as quickly as they should. First, there would be no smiles or joyful expressions by six months. By nine months, there is no imitation or repeating of sounds, or facial expressions. At 12 months, there is no babbling or back-and-forth gestures such as waving, pointing, or reaching. By the age of 24 months, there is no meaningful, two word phrases including “conversations.” Some have the tendency to try and avoid contact. A child might do this by becoming limp when you pick them up or falling back when they are being held. Babies may become extremely flustered, and may rock or bang their heads on things. Treatment can involve behavioral treatments or medicine or a bit of both. When spotted, an early intensive program may better chance of hitting milestones. This treatment can include working with therapists that help with motor skills, behavioral, and social issues. Some examples of treatment for autism is Speech & Language, occupational, or a neurologist, but most commonly will be a combination of multiple therapies. ABA, or Applied Behavorial Analysis is a popular therapy that many therapists use. The National Research Council says that during preschool, one with autism should undergo around 25 hours of therapy.
