To start I must first explain the concept of the humble rocket. A Rocket, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is a cylindrical device containing material that explodes, sending the device through the air. This means that although you car/bike/segway is very fast, it is not a rocket. Back to the point, now that we know what a rocket is we can now go into the history. The …show more content…
They consisted of saltpeter, coal, and sulfur. For you sciency types saltpeter is potassium nitrate, coal is carbon, and sulfur is sulfur (what else would it be). These rockets were probably thrown into a fire and sent everywhere. These rockets were good for fun and games, but some genius, again nobody knows, realized that they could be strapped to arrows to create the first ballistic missile. After this rocketry spread to europe were a french guy, Jean Froissart, figured out that launching a rocket out of a tube increased its accuracy. A German by the name of Johann Schmidlap created the first multistage rocket. After this rockets kept getting better and better. Rockets at this point were still solid fueled until an american man named Robert H. Goddard created a rocket with a liquid propellant. This was a huge leap because you could now control when the rocket was lit and when it wasn’t.(NASA)
This basically is it for the history of rockets. As technology advanced so did the rocket all the way till the first man reached the moon. Although it was one big leap for man it was not so for the rocket. The rocket has basically been the same since Goddard, and until someone invents a new fuel they will basically stay the
