Informational Interview
For this assignment, I chose to conduct an informational interview with Claudia Romo, a Career Technical Education (CTE) Counselor at Rio Hondo College. The reason I chose to interview a CTE counselor was to learn more about the CTE Counseling and how different the student-counselor interactions are to general academic counselors. The informational interview provided me with a different lens in viewing community college as I discovered the different counseling objectives CTE counselors have to general counselors. These counseling objectives range from longer counseling sessions, direct employer interactions, job site field trips, and career related workshops.
Career Related Goals
According to Claudia, counselors mediate between many employers and best prepare students to the workforce as opposed to general counseling in which the workforce is a distant future for students. I found it insightful to discover that CTE counselors keep close relationships with local employers to better advise and inform students on how to approach work-school balance. The contacts with employers Claudia creates not only benefits her in becoming better informed to advise students but it allows her to construct a helpful social network.

As a counselor, balancing the paperwork, personal student crises, and trying to reach the overall student population, balancing time is challenging and frustrating. If I could have my way, I would never do paperwork and always be around students. Being present with my students is something I love and always make time to do, but I am not always purposeful in the planning of the day. Lopez challenges the reader to not only be intentional about being present, but to organize your schedule so being present becomes a natural part of your schedule. For the informational interview I contacted a family friend Rebecca Gray Detling who is an executive sales manager with ICH Global LLC. I first just started off asking Rebecca on what she majored in college, how it prepared her for her job, what courses were the most valuable, and what class she wished she would have taken while in school. While in college Rebecca majored in physical therapy and had a minor in finance because she knew she wanted a future in the business field while helping out people in the medical field. Once out of college though she said that the most valuable class she took was a little of every class because with a career in the medical field, sales, and finance not one class is better than the other but a little of each class was extremely valuable.…

Informational Interview Reflection Paper My informational interview with Karissa Page was in the evening of the 27th of September. During our discourse, the majority related to her transition from a college setting to the working world as well as her experience entering a field different from her college major. These topics were appropriate for our conversation on the grounds that Ms. Page’s undergrad majors were biology and psychology, and she pursued public health while I will be completing a degree in molecular genetics & psychology and would like to study conservation. Her experience traversing a field at which she felt drawn to that was different from initially planned was one aspect for which I had hoped to draw connection through.…
