The reason this was attention-grabbing was because it made sense. I smirk as I read the information presented by Sousa because I related to what he was saying. Especially the example she gave about her memorizing the poem because she didn’t want to make a fool of herself, even though she had no idea what the sense of it was (Sousa, 2011. P. 53). Sousa, (2011) stated, “studies have demonstrated that when new learning is readily comprehensible and can be connected to past experiences, there is substantially more cerebral activity followed by dramatically improved retention” (p. 53). I learned that meaning is more significant because children have a greater probability of retaining the information. I also think that this is true for adults when there is meaning behind what we are learning we want to retain it. For instance, if we read an interesting story to young children that have meaning there is a higher probability that they will remember
