Assessment is an informative way to gather information about student learning and provide information for further teaching toward future assessment items. “Assessment can be interpreted as two major categories for conceptions of learning: learning as attaining objectives and learning as constructing knowledge.” (Clarke & Pittaway, 2014, p. 311) The three various assignments My Story, Your Story; Persuasive writing to raise public awareness; Area of Study The American Dream all fit into the category of learning attaining objectives; however the assessments could also provide as a starting point to construct knowledge on language forms, techniques and structures for various writing as an informal way of assessing student assessment. These types of assessments can be used as stepping stones to build knowledge for a future objective obtaining assessment that expresses the final learning of the individual. “informal assessment is always formative in nature – seeking feedback on student progress.” (Brady & Kennedy, 2009, p. 18) While using informal assessments are very useful for understanding and “it is very desirable for teachers to use a variety of techniques to ensure that the multidimensionality of student performance is adequately explored. The stage 5 assessment Persuasive writing allows students to focus on a topic that has particular interest for their writing and to write in a format that they feel most comfortable with allowing the assessment to be student centred and authentic. Sam chose an issue close to home writing against the building of the freeway in his community. Similarly the Stage 4 assessment My Story, Your Story gives students more structure to the style of writing however the students still have the ability to incorporate their own interests and experiences into the work selecting and influential Aboriginal to society; seen in the work of Kelsey who has chosen the footballer Adam Goodes who influences society both on and off the field. Consequently, based on my field experience assessments were used as described above yet both schools treated assessments in vastly different ways. While at Wildwood I had the opportunity to act as a scribe for multiple students as they wrote their student learning assessments or SLA’s. It was interesting to note that many of the instructors were dismayed at the difficulties students were having with the exam suggesting that at the very least the teachers were aware and using assessments as a milestone to assess student progress, however there appeared to be very little done to help students such as making changes to lessons. I say this not to suggest that the Wildwood teachers are inept, but more to suggest that perhaps assessments have lesser value in the earlier grades especially when literacy is the focus.…
