Informal vs. Formal Training
Regardless if individuals are new to a company or the organization seeks change, employees are challenged to learn through both formal and informal means. Human resource developers need to know more about enhancing learning and how it could work for their organization. In the corporate world, questions often arise as to whether formal or informal training is the best avenue. The most structured form of learning is formal training which includes classroom training, e-learning, and workbooks among others. It is typically associated with full-scale learning management systems (LMS), with structured courses and curricula (**needs citation**). Formal training can be very efficient, easily bringing newcomers up to speed. However, major downfalls like cost, time, and information relevancy can have a negative impact on this process. Formal training has only been marginally successful in job performance, according to Marty Rosenheck of Cognitive Advisors. Conversely, informal training occurs more frequently in the workplace compared to formal training. It accounts for all the ways people learn on the job, including trial and error, conversations, observations, asking questions, and apprenticeships. The Association for Talent Development (ASTD) defines informal learning in the negative as “a learning activity that is not easily recognizable as formal training and performance support.” It takes place without an instructor and is controlled by employees.…
