Informal vs. Formal Training
Regardless if individuals are new to a company or the organization seeks change, employees are challenged to learn through both formal and informal means. Human resource developers need to know more about enhancing learning and how it could work for their organization. In the corporate world, questions often arise as to whether formal or informal training is the best avenue. The most structured form of learning is formal training which includes classroom training, e-learning, and workbooks among others. It is typically associated with full-scale learning management systems (LMS), with structured courses and curricula (**needs citation**). Formal training can be very efficient, easily bringing newcomers up to speed.

This style of training can be taught by most anyone, an executive, manager, human resources representative, or outside individual, making training sessions easy and convenient to carry out. One standard presentation can be assembled then used repeatedly by each region or branch. Thus, making training relatively inexpensive. Companies can benefit from this type of training because it presents a perfect opportunity to refresh employees’ knowledge and teach new practices at all levels.
The training sessions can take place on a large or small scale and nearly anywhere. Companies can choose how many employees need to be involved and plan accordingly. It may be as simple as managers meeting in a board room or as complex a ballroom full of employees for a regional gathering. Other directed training is efficient for reaching a large number of employees because it tends to be more of a lecture style with some sort of visual (ie- PowerPoint). When you hear the word lecture you are probably thinking of someone talking and giving instructions; and the people who are receiving the message listening, and acting on those instructions. According to Reference for Business, “the lecture method is best used for creating a general understanding of a topic. In the pure lecture, communication is one way from trainer to trainees. It is an extensive oral presentation of the material” (**incorrect citation Par. 6**). Basically it is what everyone thought managers teach the new employees by talking to them about how to perform the specific job. Orientation is the next topic we are going to talk about. Orientation is actually one of the most important parts of learning about the new business and how they operate. Training Today says, “orientation determines how new employees perceive and adjust to the organization. Orientation should make the new employees feel welcome and provide them with the information they need to begin their new jobs safely and productively.” (Par. 6) orientation is very important because it lets your employees know their workplace.
